Department of English has been an integral part of S. Nijalingappa College ever since its inception in 1963.

The Department has been enduring earnestly to achieve lofty and noble goals in the realm of higher education in its commitment to bring qualitative improvement as well as employability for the stake holders. The department pushes itself forward by leaps and bounds in revamping and rescheduling as per the changes and challenges brought by the UGC, meeting the global requirement. The UGC sponsor Career Oriented program on NGO Management and development and four National Seminars as well as three Minor Research Project and one Student Research Project are great achievement from a small footing. The mentioned programs like functional English Communication skills, Corporate Etiquette, Medical Transcription , Accent Training, Academic Improvement Module, European Language- French to gain confidence to face interviews , Group Discussion and other challenges of globalization. Besides these, Gender Sensitization, NGO Management and Development, Public Speech, Civil Defense – Orientation Certificate program , Mock Drill, Bomb Blast and Disaster Management ( for inculcating a sense of Patriotism to face unforeseen and unprecedented situations and incidents) for students and ‘ Enhance and Enrich English Communication’ , a Certificate Course for teaching faculty were successfully held. An IQAC Initiative UGC STRIDE sponsored Effective Communication Skills for students was successful in a virtual mode. Both National and International guests lecture were hosted. The teaching faculty  is very efficient with Doctoral degree and has presented papers both in National and International Seminars and have also served as resource person and chairperson . The English Department was recognized as one of the ranking departments under UGC CPE. The Department organized IQAC Initiative One Day National Symposium on ‘Trends and Challenges in Contemporary Indian Literature’on 31. 10. 2018 and UGC STRIDE sponsored IQAC Initiative Virtual National Level Conference on Quest for Cultural Identity in Postmodern Indian Literature on 02.11.2021 There is not a stone unturned. The Oriental Language Lab serves as a platform for Innovative teaching. Awareness of Tiger Extinct, Cleanliness, Energy Conservation, Save River Campaign and Innovative teaching are some of the hallmarks of Departmental activities. Oratory Club lets the students to shed their inhibitions and gain confidence to express their views on any given topics to discuss in a semi formal situation.
